The locality

The locality information on the specimen label is the address of where the plant specimen was collected.

It includes a number of distinct elements such as:

• Country
• State or Territory
• region
• perhaps some finer defined areas
• a general description of where the collecting site was, to various levels of precision
• special features such as national parks, rivers and mountain ranges are sometimes mentioned

The description of the locality sometimes includes directions and measurements of distance to describe the position of the collecting locality more precisely.

A good locality description enables a more accurate and more precise calculation of the geocode for the collection site.
