"Betty Hain
was a notable resident of the Barrenjoey Lighthouse cottages in Sydney, New South Wales, during the mid-20th century. She and her family were part of a post-World War II artists' commune that formed on the Barrenjoey.
"Betty Hain lived in the historic lighthouse cottages at Barrenjoey, which had been converted into a series of studios and residences after the lighthouse became automated.
"The Artists' Commune: Following WWII, the headland hosted a community of artists and sculptors. Her husband, David Hain, was an economics student who maintained a residence in one of the cottages...
"Life at the Headland: Life for the Hains at Barrenjoey was rustic and physically demanding. They often relied on a huge underground well for water, with David Hain famously lowering buckets by hand to supply the household."
David Hain was a planner with the NCDC from 1968 after a period of working in local government in NSW and as a consultant in private practice. After leaving the NCDC he worked in Indonesia and then for Lend Lease in Saudi Arabia for many years.
