He was New South Wales' Government Botanist in 2007 and 2008, and for eight years was the executive director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney (2003–2011). Subsequently, he was director of Conservation, Living Collections and Estates, Kew, London from 2011, and since 2013 he has been director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.
He is an honorary professorial fellow at the University of Melbourne and is currently (2020) president of the International Association of Botanic Gardens.
He is an internationally recognised plant scientist with specialist expertise in freshwater algae but a broad interest in horticulture and biodiversity. By 2007 Dr Entwisle was author of over 70 scientific publications, including three books, and has chaired numerous national and State committees.
Dr Entwisle is also a regular contributor to ABC Sydney radio and writes occasionally for popular science and nature magazines.
