Born in 1801 at Hackney, London, UK. died in Adelaide, SA, 25 May 1864.
Father of the Queensland botanist F.M. Bailey.
He arrived in South
Australia in 1839, to become Colonial Botanist & curator of botanic garden for the colony of South Australia, but these positions were abandoned late in 1841.
In 1842 he established a nursery in Hackney, Adelaide.
He is said to have made collections
of plants about Adelaide and district.
Bailey sent seed material and live plants to the English
firm of Loddiges, but he does not appear to have published any articles or to have left any
record of his collections.
He is buried at St Marys Anglican Church Cemetery
St Marys, Mitcham City, South Australia (grave 64).
