What is BIN21?
BIN21 is the Biodiversity Information Network. It is an
international organization designed to link and coordinate
the activities of agencies and network information sites
concerned with biodiversity. It was created to support the
Convention on
Biological Diversity and the Agenda 21 that
followed the Earth Summit at Rio, June 1992.

What information does BIN21 provide?
- BIN21 maintains a library of pointers
to network information resources relevant to biodiversity.
- BIN21 maintains detailed information about databases, and other
network publications, that are registered with BIN21.

A BIN21 "node" is a network information server on the Internet
that contributes. Many network site may point to BIN21; nodes
are sites that contribute materially to the activities of BIN21.

Why should I register my database with BIN21?
Registering with BIN21 conveys several advantages, notably
- BIN21 nodes all over the world will provide pointers to your database.
- BIN21 will provide advice to contributors, submission forms, etc
on all nodes.
How do I register my database with BIN21?

Who should I contact for more information?
Each BIN21 node provides contact information, including
email address, snail mail address, as well as telephone
and/or fax numbers. For general advice first contact the
BIN21 nearest to you (see the list below).

Can my network site become a BIN21 "node"?
Yes. To become a node a network must meet some
basic criteria, that are
in essence:
- nodes must add value to BIN21 by contributing some unique service;
- nodes must support the aims and principles of BIN21.

How do I subscribe to BIN21's mailing lists?
Send an email message to the address listserv@ftpt.br
In the body of the message include a line of the form
subscribe LIST YOUR_NAME
e.g.
subscribe biodiv-l Anne Green
subscribe bin-tech Joe Bloggs
If you wish to remove your name from one of the email lists
(say BIN-TECH) send a message of the form "unsub LIST",
e.g.
unsub biodiv-l
unsub bin-tech
To contribute an item to any of the lists simply mail it
to the appropriate list:
- BIODIV-L for general discussion of biodiversity issues
- BIN-TECH for technical discussion re dvlopment of BIN21
- BIN-REACH for discussion on community networking and outreach
- BIN-PLAN for discussion about BIN21 initiatives and policy (not created)
Can I contribute to the work of BIN21?
Any one can contribute.
Everyone should contribute.
There are many things you can do, including:
- Submit information about relevant new information resources
- Register your interest as an expert
- Subscribe to the mailing list
- Submit data or information to any of the network publications
registered with BIN21
- Register your databases or other network publications
- Set up BIN21 node of your own
