Pseudophegopteris Ching
Terrestrial ferns of moderate to large size. Rhizome an erect or prostate caudex, not often long-creeping, radially symmetric, dictyostelic, bearing thin, non-peltate scales, +/- hairy with thin, short hairs, lacking conspicuous marginal hairs or a long hair point. Fronds long stipitate, the stipes with 2 vascular bundles at the base uniting upwards to form a single U-shaped vascular strand, in most cases glossy, red-brown; lamina mostly bipinnate with pinnules adnate to the pinna rachis, sometimes pinnate-pinnatifid, sometimes the pinnules themselves pinnately lobed, pinnae +/- opposite, the basal pairs +/- reduced and more widely spaced, margins entire, scales usually absent at maturity, unicellular hairs present, mostly acicular, sometimes capitate, or both, midrib of pinnae not grooved above; veins free, usually forked, terminating in a thickened tip not reaching the margin. Sori exindusiate, round or +/- elliptic, less often spreading slightly along the veins, not terminal on the veins; sporangia on a 2-seriate stalk, bearing acicular hairs or glabrous, the annulus longitudinal, interrupted. Spores monolete, pale, with a slightly raised reticulum forming broad meshes on the surfaces.
Key modified ex Holttum 1969, Blumea 17:12 and 1981, F1. Males. ser.2, 1:345.
