A Teachers Guide to Planning

 

Once you have made your booking, here are some planning tips and advice on how to get the most out of your visit.

 


Interstate visitors

Schedule

 

For the most part our programs require one hour of your time to complete. Allow 15 minutes from the time of your arrival at the Gardens to walk your students to the Education Centre for your welcome and an introduction to the Gardens.

 

Organise to be punctual!

 

Our explainers are employed for the time specified in the booking form only. Failure to arrive on time will mean you will not receive the full hour of your booking.


Group numbers

 

Ensure your group has an adequate number of supervising adults to students ratio.

 

For self guided programs, our walks and facilities accommodate up to sixty students . For explainer led programs a limit of 12 students apply for each explainer,

 


Opening times

 

ANBG is open from 9.00am - 5.00pm.

 

Explainer led education programs are available between 9.00am - 4.00pm. Self-guided programs are available between 9.00am - 4.30pm.


How to get to the Gardens

 

ANBG Gardens is located on Clunies Ross Street, Acton at the foot of Black Mountain within 30 minutes walk of Civic, Canberra's central business district.

 

Public transport to the Gardens is not available.

Parking

 

Bus and car parking is available at the Gardens. Fees apply at a rate of $1.10 per hour. Bus parking is free for booked groups.

 

All parking fees contribute to Garden programs.

 


Preparing your students

 

Advise students to prepare for hot, cold or wet weather. The Gardens takes on a special atmosphere in the rain and it is our policy that all programs proceed, irrespective of weather.

 

The Gardens has a cafe but you may choose to advise your students to bring lunch and refreshments.

 

Books and souvenirs are available from the Botanical Bookshop.

Photocopy services are not available.


Safety first!

 

Some plants have sharp parts or toxic and irritant properties. Encourage students not to touch plants and warn them about the potential harm that can be caused by rubbing eyes or placing plant material or fingers in mouth.


Spiders and stinging or biting insects live in the Gardens. Please warn students to not disturb mulch and ground cover.

 

In the event of finding an injured animal or snake, stay away. Do not attempt to handle the animal yourself. Advise the Garden staff of the animals location immediately.

 

Keep away from ant nests.


The Gardens has many different levels and path surfaces. Warn students to take care when walking through the gardens.

 


Code of conduct

 

The Garden's environment is precious. Irresponsible behavior can harm animals and plants. Please ask your students to follow our rules.

Stay on paths and off garden beds.

Take rubbish away - we are a 'no bins' Gardens.

Don't pick or harm plants.


Arriving at the Gardens

 

On arrival at the Gardens make your way to the Education Centre and seat your students at the amphitheater.

 

One of our education officers will greet you with a brief introduction to the Gardens and outline our code of conduct for teachers and students.

We provide the following in the Education Centre.

disabled access

toilets

bubblers

refuge in inclement weather

sick bay and first aid
