About the Gardens Classroom
The Gardens Classroom program was successfully piloted in 2003 with preschool and Primary children in the greater ACT region.
We want you to bring your children to the Gardens and stay the whole day (or for as long as you want)
The Gardens Classroom aims to provide a cost-effective educational experience for visiting groups. Indoor facilities located in the Banks Building include 3 separate work areas - a carpeted room, greenhouse and protected verandah - for all-weather, hands-on activities. Outdoor facilities include the Banks Loop with its ponds and story circle, and most importantly the wider Gardens with lots of wonderful places to explore and investigate.
The Gardens Classroom program can handle up to 75 children at any one time, and works on a variable user-pays basis. Resources include a research/story book library, stereo microscopes, an extensive range of Aboriginal artifacts to study, plant propagation materials, life in fresh water activities and a collection of off-the-shelf 'activities in a box'.
A typical program might include a facilitated component (up to $5 per student) and an art/craft activity (up to $2 per student).
Free accredited teacher workshops are held regularly (on demand) to familiarize teachers with the facilities, the safety and duty of care issues, and the resources and activities that will delight their charges.
Teacher accreditation workshops usually run for 2 hours after school or during school holidays.
During 2004 we will be developing further activities for Secondary students; currently we can offer collecting native seed, plant propagation, plant diversity and classification, and Adaptations of Australian plants.
Phone the Education Officer on 6250 9535 to:
- register your interest in participating in a workshop
- discuss your excursion needs to see how we can meet them
