Pultenaea pedunculata 'Pyalong Pink'

ORIGIN: Pultenaea 'Pyalong Pink' is a selection made from a wild population of Pultenaea pedunculata 3km north of Pyalong on Northern Highway, Victoria. It was collected by Mrs Peg McAllister of Montrose, Victoria. Cultivar first received by Authority 2 November 1982. The applicants are WR and GM Elliot, 377 Cambridge Road, Montrose 3765.

DESCRIPTION: This cultivar is a colour form of Pultenaea pedunculata. It is a very dense, prostrate shrub that grows to 2m wide, and is very floriferous. The flowers are pink, plus/minus 8mm across and appear in spring. All other details of the cultivar are as for P. pedunculata.

DIAGNOSIS: Pultenaea 'Pyalong Pink' is readily distinguished from the usual P. pedunculata by its flower colour. The upper surface of the standard is pale pink with red striations radiating from the centre, while the under surface is deep pink. In usual forms of P. pedunculata the flowers are mainly yellow with a small patch of red around the base of the keel and standard of the flowers.

OTHER NOTES: Although forms close to this one are known from previous wild collections, it is uncommon and its pink flowers make it more conspicuous. It is uncommon and its pink flowers make it more conspicuous than the more common forms of P. pedunculata. This cultivar is relatively drought hardy and is frost resistant to at least -4 degrees C. The cultivar was first introduced to cultivation in October 1977.
