Thallus foliose, loosely adnate to adnate or subpulvinate, to 4–6 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, flat, irregular, irregularly branched, becoming laciniate, 1–3 mm wide, lacking lobules; laciniae 0.7–1.5 mm wide; apices subrotund. Upper surface yellow-green, darkening, slightly shiny or dull, emaculate, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobe margins commonly blackened. Medulla white, intermittently yellow or orange adjacent to lower cortex. Lower surface pale brown to brown or brown-black, occasionally orange; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, grouped subapically, simple or dichotomously branched, 0.5–1.2 mm long, pale brown to brown-black, occasionally orange. Apothecia sessile, 2–8 mm wide; disc concave then undulate-distorted, shiny, brown to dark brown; thalline exciple thin, involute, becoming entire and deeply lacerate. Ascospores 6–7 × 3.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; white medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ intense orange; pigmented medulla K+ violet; containing usnic acid, norstictic acid, salazinic acid, connorstictic acid, consalazinic acid and skyrin (in pigmented medulla). | ||
A rather scattered species in south-eastern Australia (N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic.), preferring drier subalpine habitats, on exposed rock or spreading over soil and pebbles; also on the South Is. of New Zealand (central Otago). | ||
